- 1870 年代加拿大铁路工程师弗莱明首次提出全世界按统一标准划分时区
- 1883 年 11 月 18 日，美国铁路部门正式实施五个时区
- 1884 年华盛顿子午线国际会议正式通过采纳这种时区划分，称为世界标准时制度
